Sabarimala - Temple Details : 

Sabarimala is the most famous Hindu pilgrimage centre in Kerala and India. At a distance of 63 Kms from Pathanamthitta, this temple is dedicated to Lord Ayyappa. It is one of the most visited pilgrim centers in the world with an estimated 45 - 50 million devotees every year.

At a distance of 146 Kms from Kochi and 159 Kms from Trivandrum, this temple is one of the oldest temples in India, with history of more than 5000 years old. The temple dedicated to Lord Ayyappan here is situated in the midst of 18 hills, at an altitude of about 3000 feet. It is believed that Lord Parasurama installed the idol of Ayyappa at Sabarimala.

The pilgrimage season begins in the month of November and ends in January (the temple remains closed during rest of the year except for the first five days of each Malayalam month). The devotees following Ayyappa Vratam (Ayyappa Maala - a 41 days Vratam with strict restrictions) carry Irumudi Kettu containing traditional offerings to the Lord. Mandalapooja (Nov17th) and Makaravilakku (Jan 14th) are the important events of the temple. Makara Jyothi (a celestial star) appeared on Jan 14th is the most crowded occasion of this temple.

Sabarimala temple has no restrictions of caste and religion. The temple is open to males of all age groups, but women between 10-50 years age group are NOT allowed into the temple. Sabarimala can be reached by 8 KMs trek from Pamba, which is the nearest road point to the temple.

Importance of Sabarimala Divine 18 Steps

SABARIMALA- Importance of 18 Divine Steps are called as  Pathinettapadi (18 divine steps) to the sanctum sanctorium is divine in all aspects. The first three steps depict "Bhoomi, Agni, Vayoo & Akash", 6 to 9 steps for Karmendriya, 10 to 15 for Jhanandriya, 16th for mind 17th Intelligence and 18th Jeevathma Bhava.

Those who cross all these steps are believed to achieve "Punyadarshan". The steep steps are so important and holy that no one can climb them without fasting for 41 days and carrying the holy irrumudi on ones' head.There are many mythological stories associated with the holy Patinettampadi. Some believe the eighteen steps denote the 18 puranas. Some say that 18 weapons with which Lord Ayyappa destroyed the evil denotes the 18 steps. Others are of the belief that the first five steps denotes the indriyas (eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin).

The next eight steps signifies the ragas (tatwa, kama, krodha, moha, lobha, madha, matsraya, and ahamkara. The next three steps signifies the gunas (satwa, rajas and thamas). The seventeenth and the eighteenth denotes vidhya and ignorance.

The Patinettampadi can be used only twice - once for ascending the temple and once for descending below leaving the hill. Before ascending or descending the steps, pilgrims break coconut as an offering to the steps. One needs to have the sacre Irumudi on head while going up or down the 18 steps. While descending the steps the devotees climb down backwards facing the sanctum sanctorum.

One who climbs the Patinettampadi for 18 times shall plant a sapling of coconut in Sabarimala.

Built on a plateau about 40 feet high, the Ayyappan temple commands a lofty view of the mountains and valleys all around. The ancient temple has been rebuilt after a fire in 1950. Within the confines of the sanctum sanctorium with a copper-plated roof and four golden finials at the top, two mandapams, the belikalpura which houses the altar, the flag-staff replacing the earlier stone image of the deity, sits a beautiful idol of Ayyappa in panchaloha, an alloy of five metals, about one and a half feet tall.

THE FIRST INCARNATION OF SRI PRAHLADA : ( A Short Story About Prahlada Great Devotee of Lord vishnu)

Sri prahlada was the dear son of sri lilavathi and Hiranyakasipu. Even while in his mother 's womb, he was initiated into worship of Lord Narayana,by the sage Narada .Ever since birth ,he had been absorbed in the repetition of Lord Hari's name. He had no thought of this world.

Hiranyakasipu, who considered Lord Narayana as his sworn enemy, did not like
his son's behaviour. He sent his son, Prahlada, to the teachers of the demonrace,
Chanda and Marka, in the hope of reforming him and educating him to be good
and virtuous. Prahlada had no taste for the kind of instruction imparted by his
teachers. He paid no heed to anything other than the meditation on the Lord.
He began to teach his fellow -demon pupils the greatness of praying to Lord

                
 Narayana and led them to join him in singing the praises of Lord. Hiranyakasipu
sent for the boy and asked him to recite a verse which he had learnt from his
teachers.Thereupon ,the prodigy repeated a verse extolling the devine qualities
of Lord and the efficacy of praying to him in these words.
Those hands deserve the name that worship the Lord:
The tongue which praises the Lord,desrve to be called so:
The sight that beholds the Lord,deverse its name:

The head that bows to Seshasayi(one who reclines onthe serpent -
king Lord Adisesha) is fit to be called so:
He then affirmed fearlessly that his mind which was drunk with the nectar of
the meditation onthe Lotus feet of Lord(Narayana).could not rest on any thing
else.

 The father then angrily demanded of him to say where Lord Hari is present ;
The boy instantly replied;
"Donot dought the presence of the Lord in one place or another.Chakri (the
bearer of the wheel Vishnu) is present wherever you seek him in the world"

In the end, Hiranyakasipu subjected prahlada to many cruel tortures inthe hope
of making him giveup his devotion to Lord Vishnu.He caused the boy to be
trampled over by elephants.He had the boy thrown down the slopes of mountains,immersed in the ocean ,cast into a blazing fire ,bitten by venomous serpants and even made him partake of a cup of the vilest poison.Prahlada came out unscathed and undeterred,because of his abiding and unflinching
faith in Lord Vishnu.

In utter disgust ,hiranyakasipu called his son and demanded of him to show his
god,whome he had descibed omnipresent,in an adjacent pillar.Prahlada humbly
but firmly agreed to do so .In his inveterato anger and arrogance,Hiranyakasipu
struck the pillar with his mace .Instantaneously Lord Hari emerged from the
pillar, in the manifestation of the man -lion;

 The State capital reverberated to the ‘Teen Maar’ beat on Saturday, as the annual extravaganza -- the centralised Ganesh idol immersion procession, was taken out amid a tension-free atmosphere marked by revelry, religious fervour and of course, a trace of anxiety among the police top brass.

At innumerable places, stages were set up to welcome the ‘Ganeshas’ from different localities, as the tastefully decorated trucks carrying the idols inched their way through a literal sea of humanity. The procession wended its way through Chandrayangutta, Shamshergunj, Aliabad, Syed Ali Chabutra, Nagulchinta Chowrasta, Shahalibanda, Charminar, Madina, Afzalgunj, Osmani Gunj, Mozamjahi Market, Abids, Basheerbagh, Liberty and reach Hussainsagar. Elsewhere, idol immersion was taking place at a brisk pace in 11 lakes on the outskirts in addition to Hussainsagar lake.

beejakshara mantra Sri Krishna- DWARAKA-SECRETS-REVEALED

Lord Sri Krishna chose a remote location, far beyond the reach of Jarasandh. He picked distant Dwarka on the western coast of India near Gujarath, far from Mathura, and spent a year putting hisplans into action. He built on the sunken remains of a previous kingdom, Kushasthali,which itself was built on older ruins, all underwater. Krishna reclaimed a hundredmiles of land from the sea and called in Vishwakarman, the architect of the gods to give him a city that was the envy of the world.

DWARAKA- CITY DESCRIPTION

 Dwarka (LORD SRI KRISHNAS PLACE) was a city of rose and gold. The palaces and many of the mansions were built of gold, over which pink lotus domes towered, topped by soaring golden spires. The floors were made of emeralds. Precious stones studded the walls and crystal arches curved overhead, inlaid with gold. The houses were beautifully decorated and sculptures adorned the walls. Even the cowsheds were made of silver, brass and iron.Seen in this beautiful picture is lord Krishna coming to the island city of dwarka. Dwarka was a very well planned city, following the highly developed science of town planning.


The architect, Vishwakarman, first mapping out the highways, lanes, gates and parks. He sectioned off plots and divided the city into six zones, residential and commercial. He planned out the port and created the bridges and gateways and the fortifications. Everything was laid out in detail before the construction began.Like many kingdoms of the time Dwarka had a passport system. Its citizens were issued with a clay seal which had to be presented when they entered or left the massive gates. The seal of Dwarka was a mythical three headed dog and seals matching the description have been found in the undersea ruins today.

In the Newspaper The Hindu dated 23 Feb 2007 an article was published which I reproduce here vervatim.” CHENNAI: Ancient structural remains of some significance have been discovered at Dwaraka, under water and on land, by the Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW) of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Alok Tripathi,Superintending Archaeologist, UAW, said the ancient underwater structures found in the Arabian Sea were yet to be identified. "We have to find out what they are. They are fragments. I would not like to call them a wall or a temple. They are part of some structure," said Dr. Tripathi, himself a trained diver.

FOUND VALUABLES AFTER EXCAVATION UNDER THE SEA - DWARAKA 

The first archaeological excavations at Dwaraka were done by the Deccan College,Pune and the Department of Archaeology, Government of Gujarat, in 1963 under the direction of H.D. Sankalia. It revealed artifacts many centuries old.

Thirty copper coins were also found in the excavation area. The structures found on land belonged to the medieval period. "We have also found 30 copper coins. We are cleaning them. After we finish cleaning them, we can give their date," he said.Dwaraka is a coastal town in Jamnagar district of Gujarat. Traditionally, modern Dwaraka is identified with Dvaraka or Dvaravati, mentioned in the Mahabharata as Krishna's city.

Dwaraka was a port, and some scholars have identified it with the island of Barka mentioned in the Periplus of Erythrean Sea. Ancient Dwaraka sank in sea and hence is an important archaeological site.” My idea is not to go in the discussion of how the city went under the sea but the fact is that this city is now approximately under water of the Arabian sea some 135 feet below water. This city has been mentioned in the Mahabharata and that this city has been found, dated,and mapped. The probable date of this city is between 9500 to 7500 years before present which will put it as 7500 to 5500 years BC.
