Philosophical Significance of Grinding wheat
Apart from the meaning which the people of Shirdi put on this incident of grinding wheat, there is, we think, a philosophical significance too. Sai Baba lived in Shirdi for about sixty years and during this long period, He did the business of grinding almost every day - not, however, the wheat alone; but the sins, the mental and physical afflications and the miseries of His innumerable devotees. The two stones of His mill consisted of Karma and Bhakti, the former being the lower and the latter the upper one. The handle with which Baba worked the mill consisted of Jnana.


It was the firm conviction of Baba that Knowledge or Self-realization is not possible, unless
there is the prior act of grinding of all our impulses, desires, sins; and of the three gunas, viz. Sattva, Raja and Tama; and the Ahamkara, which is so subtle and therefore so difficult to be got rid of.
This reminds us of a similar story of Kabir who seeing a woman grinding corn said to his Guru, Nipathiranjana, "I am weeping because I feel the agony of being crushed in this wheel of wordly existence like the corn in the handmill."

Nipathiranjana replied, "Do not be afraid; hold fast to the handle of knowledge of this mill, as I do, and do
not wander far away from the same but turn inward to the Centre, and you are sure to be saved."

Sai Baba of Shirdi (d. October 15, 1918), also known as Shirdi Sai Baba, was an Indian guru, yogi and fakir who is regarded by his Hindu and Muslim followers as a saint. Some of his Hindu devotees believe that he was an ncarnation of Shiva or Dattatreya, and he was regarded as a satguru and an incarnation of Kabir.  In 1917, Baba once called Abdul Baba, Nana Chandorkar, Mahalasapati, Dasganu and others and started asking each of them, "Do you know who you are?" Each of them replied, "I am your sishya (disciple)." Baba said, "Nonsense! Don’t use that term any longer. I have no disciples in this world. I have countless devotees. You do not recognize the distinction between a disciple and a devotee.

 Anyone can be a devotee. But that is not the case with the disciple. A disciple is one who carries implicitly the commands of the guru (the preceptor). The mark of the sishya is total devotion to the preceptor. Only the man who says, 'I have none in the world other than the preceptor,' is a disciple. How far have you respected my injunctions? How are you entitled to claim that you are my disciples? Only the one who follows me like my shadow can claim to be my disciple. The devotee is one who prays to the Lord wherever he may be. Hence, there is a big difference between a disciple and a devotee. The disciple and the preceptor are like two bodies with one spirit. The disciple should have no sense of separateness from the preceptor. He should feel, 'I and you are one.' There are no such disciples to be found in the world. There are millions of devotees, but no disciples."

On hearing this, Shyam was in deep pain. He felt within himself, "Apart from serving at your feet, I have no other concern." Baba then went into another room and called Shyam inside. "In this entire world, for me you are the only disciple. All others are only devotees." At that moment, Shyam fell at the feet of Baba, and cried out, "You alone, you alone (are my refuge)!" and breathed his last.

 A Sai Devotee I don't know how to thank Baba for showing me how he is with me in every moment of life. I want to share my today's experience...we were set to get our visa extension and today we found an article saying there's some important papers we have to send in addition to the ones we sent...and my husband and I had a discussion that we might have to lose hopes for our extension...after this I went near Baba's picture and asked him to help me and give the extension because that was very crucial and we had a very unpeaceful yr last yr and that i need peace this year. And within an hour after I prayed to Baba ...

we received an email stating that we got an extension for 3 yrs...This is a live example to show that Baba is always with me....pls Baba be there with me n my family like this in every moment of life...pls pls be with us in each n every second of our lives and let us lead a peaceful life. A Sai Devotee Sairam, you blessed me with my second pregnancy when I was desperate for a female child, but now I realize it's a male child and my heart is just not accepting it. I understand it is more important for it to be healthy and grow up to be a good person but at the same time I really long for a female child and even now.

I am expecting your miracle when I deliver. If that's not going to happen, I humbly request you to please help me accept this child wholeheartedly and love him just as much and pls give me the strength to bring him up to be as wonderful as my first son, your divine blessing again. He is really your child in the truest sense of the word and I am the luckiest mother alive due to your blessings.
